I purchased Trim from Bert McMillan, Craigmuie, Moniaive, Scotland on my first trip to Scotland in 1985. Actually, I had just purchased a 7 month old son of Bathgate’s Vic from Bert and while there told my wife, Nancy, to go and pick out a pup from a litter of 7 week old puppies that Bert also had a the time. Since the pups were priced at about $35 in US fund how could I go wrong?

Nancy picked a typically marked female that had a small patch of tan “trim” on each cheek and was promptly named accordingly. Little did we know how very much this gal would change our lives forever.

Trim was by John Templeton’s Ben (Grandson of Sandy Campbell’s Hemp and Mackenzie’s Queen) and out of Bert’s Nell (Granddaughter of Willie Welsh’s great Don and Gail and also Granddaughter of Bert’s Tan, a son of McTeir’s Ben).

When I brought Trim home from Scotland in 1985 I didn’t have a kennel available for her outside so she was raised “temporarily” in the house. She slept on the floor on Nancy’s side of the bed. Trim died the day before her 15th birthday and had spent no more than half a dozen nights out of doors. Ha! My only regret about Trim is that she was a non-breeder. She is greatly missed.

As only the second dog I ever trained at the time Trim was clearly “a cut above” most dogs. She was a very wise bitch with tremendous controlled power and an insatiable desire to please. We made a very formidable team and Trim’s only limitation was that imposed by her handler/trainer, me. Trim qualified for the USBCHA National Finals every year of her competitive life, from 1989 to 1995. During that time we travelled to 6 National Finals and Trim put me in the top 20 (Final Go-round) 5 out of the 6 times.
